Rock Type: Dunite
Location: Nunavut, Canada
Description: The image is dominated by intensely serpentinized (altered by the addition of water) olivine (grey-white) and mica crystals breaking down to chlorite (black and white striped crystals and relict yellow). There is growth of magnetite along cleavage planes of the mica due to retrogressive alteration (breakdown). The highly birefringent (bright coloured) crystals are relict olivines not yet affected by serpentinization. The rock was studied for its diamond potential.
